In April of 2001 following months of
renovations, Rob MacLeod followed his dream and opened up the “Northern Knights
Feast” in the Capitol Theatre on Brodie Street.
It had been Rob’s dream to bring “The Feast” to Thunder Bay since he
worked at the same show in Toronto in the early 70’s. Rob wanted The Feast to be a first class
theatrical experience that was accessible to the common man and that it
was. The Northern Knights Feast went on
to be Thunder Bay’s longest running theatrical production, running over 2 1/2
years. Every night the audience would
leave with smiles on their faces talking
about what a wonderful time they had, often inquiring as to whether the actors
were “from out of town”. Rob took great
pleasure in the fact that he could put on a professional quality show using
local talent (local actors, local musicians and local technicians). He went on to produce other successful shows
at the Capitol which included “The Rocky Horror Show”, “Nunsense”, “I Do! I Do!”, “Shirley Valentine” to name but a
few. Rob also produced and directed
variety show fundraisers at the Capitol for various local groups, free of
charge. In September of 2003, Rob and
two of his actors started the “Capitol Kids” to pass on their shared passion
for theatre to Thunder Bay’s children.
Rob truly loved the theatre and theatre people.
Rob MacLeod passed away on January 17th 2004 and his funeral was overflowing with people who shared his love for the theatre and their love for him. It was in Rob’s memory that we founded Rob MacLeod’s Capitol Kids to continue Rob’s vision of producing quality entertainment using local talent. In some way we are all Rob MacLeod’s Capitol Kids.
